What Is Orange Wine (And No, It’s Not Made From Oranges)
July 01, 2025

Orange wine might be one of the trendiest pours popping up at wine bars and restaurants—but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. A common misconception is that it’s made from oranges, but in reality, the name has nothing to do with citrus fruit and everything to do with color. So what is orange wine, exactly?

How is Orange wine made?

Orange wine is made from white wine grapes—but unlike traditional white wines, the grape skins aren’t removed before fermentation. Instead, they’re left in contact with the juice for days, weeks, or even months, similar to how red wines are made. This skin contact is what gives orange wine its amber-orange hue, as well as its bold, tannins.

Wine Barrels An Ancient Technique with Modern Buzz

Although orange wine is enjoying a modern resurgence, this technique isn’t new. Skin-fermented white wines date back over 5,000 years to the country of Georgia, where winemakers used large clay vessels called qvevri to ferment and store their wines underground.

The method remained common throughout parts of Europe—particularly in Italy—until the mid-20th century, when cleaner, more “technically correct” white wines became the standard. Now, orange wine is making a flavorful comeback and gaining fans for its natural, unfiltered style and food-friendly versatility.

🍽️ What to Pair with Orange Wine

Because of its bold personality, orange wine pairs best with equally flavorful foods. Try it with:

  • Spicy, fermented dishes like kimchi, curry, or Sichuan-style cuisine
  • Hearty vegetables such as roasted squash, mushrooms, or eggplant
  • Cheese and charcuterie boards—especially with funky, aged cheeses
  • Grilled or smoked meats, especially with earthy marinades and sauces

Basically, if the dish packs a punch, orange wine can handle it.

Whether you’re a curious sipper or a seasoned enthusiast, this ancient-meets-modern style might just be your new favorite pour.

🍷✨ Cheers to bold choices and even bolder flavors!
